To search other places go to Yahoo or Google, and type in New York origin OR New York meaning , etc.I am looking for a source that gives original meaning of names like New York and Moscow?
New York was named to honor the Duke of York who purchased the grant of Long Island and other islands on the New England coast made in 1635 to the Earl of Stirling, and, in 1664, the Duke equipped an armed expedition, which took possession of New Amsterdam, which was thenceforth called New York, after the Duke. This conquest was confirmed by the treaty of Breda, in July 1667.

Moscow is named after the river Moskva, where it is located.

Actually a lot of places names comes from the person who owned the area, the geology of the area where it is located or to honor an important person from that place or who made something important for tha place.

  • Do meaning of baby names mean a lot to you? I love Molly but the meaning is terrible!?

It means Sea of Bitterness which means that a person is angry and discourage and not hopeful. This person's heart is hardened by some tragic event and will continue to be gloomy until they can deal with and/or be more forward with their life. This person is also a party pooper.

Do you let that determine what you will name your child?Do meaning of baby names mean a lot to you? I love Molly but the meaning is terrible!?
Molly is an ugly name with an ugly meaning..molly is a horrible name.. except for the 5,000,000 dogs named molly
No! One of my favorite names is Ellie and it doesn't even have a meaning!Do meaning of baby names mean a lot to you? I love Molly but the meaning is terrible!?
No, as long as I love the name, I don't really care!Do meaning of baby names mean a lot to you? I love Molly but the meaning is terrible!?
I don't pay too much attention to the meanings. Molly is such a sweet name. I've never met a Molly who was angry, discouraged, or not hopeful if that makes you feel any better.
To me the meaning is everything. I love Marie and is also means sea of bitterness. So in that case the good over comes the bad. If you love it go for it.
No, the meaning hardly matters..Molly is adorable i love that name =]
Baby names don't mean as much to me as the personal meaning
If you name your child something and later someone asks "why did you pick that name?", I think a perfectly acceptable answer is just simply "because I loved it".

I am really into meanings and when I had my daughter this year I chose her first name to be Hadley because other than the fact that I liked it, it means 'field of Heather' and my name is Heather. I chose her middle name as Lorraine because not only was that my dear grandma's name but also because it is French and our daughter was conceived on our honeymoon in Paris.

So that was my TMI for the day. But just because I am really into meanings doesn't mean that people haven't looked at me like I have five heads when I try to explain to them why I chose the names I did. Some people it just doesn't matter to and that is perfectly fine.

I LOVE Evelyn. And so what if it's old-fashioned. Look at the names that are super popular right now - Emma, Hannah, Isabella, etc - they were considered "old lady names" just a couple years ago, and now half the babies in country have those names and people are avoiding them because they're too "trendy!" A child named Evelyn will have a beautiful name that's familiar but not so common that it's overused.

Evie is a cute nickname, too! (pronounced either "ee-vee" or "eh-vee" - both are cute).

    Other bird names:

Evelyn to me is an old lady name. I worked for years as a nurse aide and had several Evelyns who were patients. However that generation will be long gone by the time a baby born today grows up into adulthood. It won't be seen as an old lady name anymore. That aside the name isn't bad at all. I wouldn't choose it but I wouldn't put the name down. What do you think of Evelyn? names meaning bird?

Are there any male names meaning "melancholy", "sad", or "Unsuccessful"?

I'm writing a story, and I am looking for a name that is at least somehow related to fruitlessness, a lack of success, or general discontent. On all of the different sites I have checked, they only have names with positive meanings; not what I am looking for.

If there are male names with these connotations, I would be very appreciative to hear them. Also, this character is born in the 1920s, so any names that would fit in that time period would also be greatly appreciated. Are there any male names meaning "melancholy", "sad", or "Unsuccessful"?
The name Tristan means sad in French and impulsive in English. Hope that helps. (And that name's been used in the Middle Ages until now.)
The only names I can think of:

Tristan: from the French root "triste" meaning sad (probably originally from Latin)

Mort: from the French "mort" meaning dead (probably also originally from Latin)

    Ulysses: means to hate

Donovan: meaning dark oneAre there any male names meaning "melancholy", "sad", or "Unsuccessful"?
