If your friend calls you mean names and doesn't seem to care if it hurts you are they really a friend?

I have this friend who has been doing nothing but judging me for the past two years and now its really starting to offend me they're calling me a whore and WRONGLY accusing my boyfriend of things its starting to get out of hand should i stop talking to this person?|||Yes, they aren't your friend if they are trying to hurt you. Stop dealing with this person immediately if not sooner.

Does the meaning of a name matter to you?

I'm just curious, because I've never cared at all what a name means, but I know a lot of people who think it's really important.

Do you think the meaning of a name is important?

Would you not use a name you love because of the meaning?

Would you use a name that wasn't your favorite because you like the meaning?

When you named your kids [if you have them], did you think about the meaning of their names?|||its neat to know, especially if it is uncommon or if a person is trying to name a person something that reflects their heritage.|||yes i do.....|||No the meaning is not important to me, I would still use the name I love even if the meaning was bad. No the meaning means nothing to me. If I didn't like the name I wouldn't use it.|||Of course it's wonderful when the meaning is fitting! But if it's keeping your from using a name you like, brush it off. If you didn't like the name, then the meaning doesn't matter. My name (I'm only 13, no kids for me!) means Dark beauty, although, what I see in the mirror is not dark, or as beautiful as it could be. My sister's name is Elise, which means God's Vow, yet my dad (who chose the name) is an atheist.

Hope I helped, and don't stress over it. It doesn't make things any better, now does it?|||I don't care about the name's meaning at all, unless it is a really awful meaning. For example, I love the name Mallory but it means "a bad omen". No matter how much I love the name I cant name my daughter a bad omen. So for the most part, I could care less.|||not all together, like if a name i like has a good meaning im like "o awesome! thats really neat!" but if it has a bad meaning like Cameron (crooked-nosed) or Kennedy (ugly head) than i wont use it.|||Not even slightly

Nobody else knows what it means and it means you might pick a name that aesthetically isnt as nice as another.

Couldnt care less. Actually I dont even know what the name we have picked means!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!|||I think it's important to at least have an inkling of what you're naming your baby. I once read a novel describing an unfortunate couple that decided to put a "trendy" twist on the name "Lorraine," and created the name "Murrain."

Cute name, huh? Except that "murrain" meant "pestilence" for centuries, and literally translates as "Death."|||The meaning of a name is important for a few reasons. Whenever I think of names I think of ones that would suit a child as well as an adult. You know something that sounds cute for a child but can be professional in their adult life. That is a very important aspect. I'm Greek so the meaning of names is a common question. In my family names are picked because of how they sound and also what they mean. Would you really want to name you child something with a stupid horrible or degrading meaning? A lot of names have meanings that are from 'old times' So in answering your other question if I loved a name with a horrible meaning no I would find another. But would I name my child a crappy name just because you like the meaning? No Because chances are you can find another name with the same or a similar meaning. My children all have strong names that sound both cute as a child but mature with adulthood. They all have great meanings and I love that about them! (not they aren't named stupid names like Apple or Kingston)|||Yes I feel the meaning of a name is important. I didn't give it a lot of thought when I was younger, but as I get older I notice meanings, traditions, etc a lot more. If I really really loved the name, I guess I could be persuaded to use it. But in the back of my mind, I believe I would be wondering what other people thought of it and if they knew the true meaning. I think I might use a name that wasn't my favorite because of the meaning. However I would have to at least LIKE the name. I did NOT think about the meanings of my children's names that much when I had them, however I think if I named a child today, I would think about it seriously. For instance, a few nice names have been ruined (for me personally) b/c of their meanings, such as Caleb meaning dog and Cameron meaning crooked nose. My son has a niece and nephew with these names and now I wonder if their mother knew the meanings before she picked the names, since she was in another country. Another one that I loved that got ruined for me was Hayden when I read it meant "heathen". My kids names aren't terrible meaning-wise but not the greatest either. They mean (1) bitter (2) healer (3) huntsman, so I guess they could have been a lot worse b/c like I said, I didn't give it much thought early on. :)|||Not especially. I mean, sometimes with obvious names like Courage, Hope, Faith, Soft, Wind, Rain, and Destiny make me compare the person to her/his name with the quality/object and sometimes they don't match. Usually, however, I look right past it.

Now if the meaning was negative, it may bug the person and everyone who knows the negative meaning.

Usually, if I like the sound, i like the name. Thats mostly how it goes.|||Q: Do you think the meaning of a name is important?

A: No, because no one would probably even know it!

Q: Would you not use a name you love because of the meaning?

A: No I mean it wouldn't matter, I don't think the meaning means anything!

Q: Would you use a name that wasn't your favorite because you like the meaning?

A: I don't really care about the meanings..

Q: When you named your kids [if you have them], did you think about the meaning of their names?

A: I don't have kids but I wouldn't think about it because I don't care...

Good Luck|||I think the meaning of a name is just a plus. You should never use a name you don't love just because you love the meaning. I really don't care what it means as long as it's a name I love.|||If I was down to two names, then I'd go with the name with the better meaning.

I will use whatever name I like, no matter what the meaning.

When I name my kids I will consider the meaning.

Where can I find the meaning of Chinese names?

So I'm working on a paper for school (a fictional research paper), and I've decided to write it on a Tien-Lung (a Chinese dragon who guards Heaven.) So far, I'm having a lot of trouble finding a list of Chinese names and their meanings. Can someone guide me?|||there is no list of Chinese names because each name is original and created by parents...

only if you know Chinese language can you get the characters and the meaning...

Sky Dragon is 澶╅緳 tian-long-12|||Ok, so first are we talking about standard mandarin (simplified), or are you talking about traditional mandarin.

Also, "Tien-Lung" as you put it, is not simplified mandarin nor traditional mandarin. it is Cantonese PinYin, not mandarin PinYin.

If you wanted it in standard Mandarin PinYin it would be 'Tian Long'

Tian (澶? - meaning sky, or heaven.

Long (榫? - meaning dragon.

What do the different names of years mean in american schools?

We often hear of sorority, freshman, etc (I can't remember the rest) but not coming from the states they actually have little meaning. What do all the different names mean and what ages of kids are they referring to?

Thanks|||In the United States your first year of high school is 9th grade and it begins when you are 14-15 years old. This year you are a freshman.

10th grade you are a sophomore and 15-16 years old.

11th grade you are a junior and 16-17 years old.

12th grade you are a senior and 17-18 years old.

You graduate at the end of your senior year and head off to college or jobs. Most are about 18 years old when they graduate.

  • Is there a meaning to the names in District 9?

Wikus, for instance. And Christopher. Strange name for an alien. Traditionally considered the patron saint of safe travel. And once believed to carry the Christ child to safety. He was traveling with his child. Does this mean his child will be the savior of his people? And don't you think this movie is just crying out for a sequel?|||The name thing never occurred to me! Hmm...

but I think that a sequel would fray all the progress the movie made- it was so tight and clean that it seems that a sequel would make it lose its meaning.

There was just enough left to the imagination, which added to the movie overall.

The origin of the name Michael is Hebrew

Notes: In the Bible, Michael was an archangel. Michael Jordan, athlete. Michael Douglas, actor. Michael J. Fox, actor.

The meaning of the name Andrew is Manly

The origin of the name Andrew is Greek

Notes: Andrew was the first apostle of Christ. Andrew Wyeth, artist. Andrew Jackson, 7th president of the U.S. Andrew Johnson 17th president of the U.S.|||Michael - someone who resembles God.

Andrew - Warrior (which I think you can use as a base for the tattoo)

    Rodriguez - Famous power

The last two names relate nicely, perhaps you can get something tribal-ish-looking.

Check these out for ideas: http://www.tattootribes.com/index.php?id…|||MICHAEL

    Gender: Masculine

Usage: English, German, Czech, Biblical, Biblical Latin

Pronounced: MIE-kəl (English), MI-khah-el (German) [key]

From the Hebrew name מִיכָאֵל (Mikha'el) meaning "who is like God?". This is a rhetorical question, implying no person is like God. Saint Michael was one of the seven archangels in Hebrew tradition and the only one identified as an archangel in the Bible. In the Book of Revelation in the New Testament he is portrayed as the leader of heaven's armies, and thus is considered the patron saint of soldiers.

The popularity of the saint led to the name being used by nine Byzantine emperors, including Michael VIII Palaeologus who restored the empire in the 13th century. It has been common in Western Europe since the Middle Ages, and in England since the 12th century. It has been borne (in various spellings) by rulers of Russia (spelled Михаил), Romania (Mihai), Poland (Michał), and Portugal (Miguel). Other more modern bearers of this name include the British chemist/physicist Michael Faraday (1791-1867) and basketball player Michael Jordan (1963-).

    ANDREW

    Gender: Masculine

    Usage: English, Biblical

    Pronounced: AN-droo (English) [key]

From the Greek name Ανδρεας (Andreas), which was derived from ανηρ (aner) "man" (genitive ανδρος (andros) "of a man"). In the New Testament the apostle Andrew, the first disciple to join Jesus, was the brother of Simon Peter. According to tradition, he later preached in the Black Sea region, with some legends saying he was crucified on an X-shaped cross. Andrew, being a Greek name, was probably only a nickname or a translation of his real Hebrew name, which is not known.

This name has been common (in various spellings) throughout the Christian world, and it became very popular in the Middle Ages. Saint Andrew is regarded as the patron of Scotland, Russia, Greece and Romania. The name has been borne by three kings of Hungary, American president Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), and, more recently, English composer Andrew Lloyd Webber (1948-).

Please list one boy name and one girl name, and their meanings.

    Thanks :]

BQ: How important is the meaning of a name to you?|||-- Felix (means: Happy, Lucky)

    -- Allegra (means: Happy, Lively)

BQ: Honestly, it doesn't matter much to me. It matters if the name I picked for my daughter meant "Son of ____" like Addison does because that means that the name was masculine and I'd hate for my daughter's name to mean that. Other than that though, it doesn't matter much

:)|||My least favorite girl name has my favorite meaning:

Renesmee - Teribble I know, a made up twilight name. However the meaning is "Reborn and Loved" and I find that so sweet. However the meaning of Esme "loved" is enough to settle me and atleast it doesn't make me gag :)

My least favorite meaning of a girl name is actually a pretty name:

Tara - With the meaning "Craggy hillside" lovely...

My favorite meaning of a boy name is the ever unusual:

Noach - meaning "Peace, rest" I think it is a great message :)

My least favorite meaning of a boys name is the terrible name:

Kennedy - with the lovely meaning "Ugly Head"

BQ: I honestly don't care my three favorite names have the meaning "Red, From Lydia Greece and From Anna and Belle"|||For girl, Teagan (little poet) or Aiyana (eternal blossom/forever flowering)... I might make it Aiyana Teagan so all together- Forever flowering little poet. For a boy, I like the meanings of Gavin (white hawk of battle) and Dante (enduring), so Dante Gavin could be Enduring white hawk of battle. =P

BQ- It's pretty important to me. It's disappointing when you're a kid and you find out your name has no cute meaning.|||Here are some of my picks, I know I wen a bit overboard! Please indulge me!

    Ladies First:

    Talia- Dew from Heaven

    Calista- Most Beautiful

    Bridget- Strength, Power

    Nadia- Hope

    Milagra- Miracle

    Blythe- Free Spirit

    And now for the Boys:

    Ethan- Strong

    Griffith- Strong Warrior

    Asher- Frotunate, Happy, Blessed One

    Derek- Power of the Tribe

I think that a name's meaning is trivial. The truth of the matter is that you fall in love with the name, not the meaning. Your daughter will not be called "Dew from Heaven" she will go by Talia. In addition, social associations are stronger tied to a name than meaning. For instance, the meaning "Noble wolf" sounds masculine and strong. Then, you realize that the name with this meaning is Adolph, and no matter how cool your son his, his name will always be associated with Hitler and genocide. Is it nice to have a lovely meaning behind the name? Yes! But, it is never a deal breaker. Fall in love with a name, not a meaning. A NAME is what counts in the end|||Beatrice. It's not my favorite name but I love the meaning "she who brings happiness"

    Runner up: Amara, "lovely forever"

BQ: Not too important, I love when a name I like has a great meaning but I still like Brody for a boy, even though it means muddy ditch.|||I don't really have *favourite* meanings, so:

    * I'd probably still name my daughter Serena Belle, my favourite name, because it means "serene beauty".

    * I'd probably still use Nathaniel Blake for my son, as it means "fair gift from God" and my partner is a Christian.

    :)

BQ - not at all :)|||i like these names:

Brielle: God is my Strength (LOVE this meaning by far my favorite!!!)

    Dominic: Belonging to God

    Joel: God will be willing

    Josie: God will add

    Calista: most beautiful

    Cadence: Rhythm

    Charlie: Free man

    Lucian: (lou-shun) Light

Anakin: Warrior|||-- Caroline - "Beautiful Woman"

-- Isaiah - "God is Salvation"

BQ - Honestly, the meanings of names isn't important to me at all.

What do these names mean in Native American Indian Language?

They want to use the Indian Version of their names instead of their Birth Names. Does anyone know where can we find the Native American Indian meaning for these names ? Or a link where we can find them ? Barbara, Christine, Edmond . Ann, Ruth Joel . Thank You for any and all help .What do these names mean in Native American Indian Language?
There is no such thing as a single Native American language. There have literally been thousands of tribes, and many of them had their own language.

There is also no concept of a name in different languages. Barbara, for example, is Barbara. It is not tied to any particular language and has no translation. However, it is true that one can find SIMILAR names in other SIMILAR languages. For example, a Spanish-speaking equivalent to Steven might be Esteban. This has to do with the origin of the name.

So to answer your question in the most practical way, you COULD look for the etymology of a name on a site like www.behindthename.com, and then you could work to find a translation of that concept in the language of your choice. The most-spoken languages are Navajo, Dakota, and Central Alaskan Yup'ik if you need to pick one.

Not too much. I could care less about meanings, really. I think it's sweet when a name has a meaning I like, but I'm not going to eliminate a name from my list just because of a bad meaning.

Besides, I can never tell the accurate meaning of any name these days. There are a million name sites, all listing about 5 different meanings between them.
it depends on what it means....but i would say that it is pretty important...
    Not much importance!
Depends. Sometimes I look for names with a specific meaning, especially while writing. If I'm trying to create a bad guy, I don't want their name to mean 'happy sunshine flower,' I want 'happy sunshine flower OF DOOM'

As far as kids go, I don't think its nearly as important. I think we define the meaning of the name by putting it on our children. Heather is Heather- a person, your daughter, not 'an evergreen flowering plant that thrives on peaty barren lands.'
Meaning is not really that important to me.

I tend to like names for their feel or style. And if I find out it has a nice meaning it's an added bonus. But it won't make me throw out a name if I find the name meaning less than pleasing.

For instance, one of my FAVE names means "blind" not exactly the best meaning. But, I don't mind.
Well coming from someone who's name means Black haha.....name meanings mean a lot to me. Not enough to change my opinion of the name...but I love finding a name I love that has an amazing meaning. I have a fascination with names and meanings so the first thing I do when I think of a name is look up the meaning. It's not the deciding factor on a name for me, but it does have a lot of meaning.

A word of warning - there isn't a magic site that will take your name in and give you a 12-generation pedigree. Genealogy takes time.

A second W. of W. - You won't find living people on any of the sites except the phone book one. You will have to find your grandparents' or great grandparents' birth dates and maiden names somewhere besides the Internet.

A third W. of W. - The free sites are supported by advertising, just like TV. You can't watch the Super Bowl without seeing a beer commercial, and you can't surf for dead relatives without seeing an Ancestry advertisement. Don't complain about advertisements. Can anyone tell me the origin and meaning of the names Christian and Vanessa?

and any other information at all relating to the history, thank you so much!!!! btw , do u like these names? Can anyone tell me the origin and meaning of the names Christian and Vanessa?
Vanessa is of English,Italian,German and Dutch background. Was invented by author Jonathan Swift for his poem Cadenus and Vanessa (1726). He arrived at it by rearranging the first name and surname of Easther Vanhomrigh a close friend of his. The name was later used to describe a breed of butterfly and was a rae name till it became popular around the mid- 20th century.

Christian is based in English, French, German and Scandanavian. Originally from the Medieval Latin Christianus meaning "a christian". Has been in use in England since the middle ages and Denmark has had 10 kings named this since the 15th century.

I have 2 cousins named christian and I have always liked the name vanessa :)
christian comes from the ancient greek word "christ貌s", which means "oiled" in fact people who had been given by god a special missione used to be oiled.

it recalls "strength", as, before the fight, fighters' muscles were covered by oil.

vanessa means butterfly in ancient grreek, but as a name it's recent: it was created by the writer Jonathan Swift for the main character of the short poem Cadenus and Vanessa,1712.

it's the union and simplification of her lover's name and surname : Ester Vanhormigh. Can anyone tell me the origin and meaning of the names Christian and Vanessa?

    Vanessa

    Origin Irish / Dutch

Related names (Pet forms) Nessi, Van, Vaness, Vanny, Fanny, Nester, Ness, "Nessa", Vanessza,(Hungarian), Wanessa (Polish)

The name Vanessa was invented by the Anglo-Irish writer Jonathan Swift for Esther Vanhomrigh, whom Swift had met in 1708 and whom he tutored. The name was created by taking "Van" from Vanhomrigh's last name and adding "Essa", the pet form of Esther. Swift may have also derived the name from the ancient mystic goddess Phanessa.

Vanessa has been adopted later as the name of a genus of butterfly.

    ALTHEA

    Gender: Feminine

    Usage: Greek Mythology (Latinized)

    Other Scripts: 螒位胃伪喂伪 (Ancient Greek)

From the Greek name 螒位胃伪喂伪 (Althaia), perhaps related to Greek 伪位胃慰蟼 (althos) "healing". In Greek myth she was the mother of Meleager. Soon after her son was born she was told that he would die as soon as a piece of wood that was burning on her fire was fully consumed. She immediately extinguished the piece of wood and sealed it in a chest, but in a fit of rage many years later she took it out and set it alight, thereby killing her son.

    BRIDGET

    Gender: Feminine

    Usage: Irish, English, Irish Mythology

    Pronounced: BRIJ-蓹t (English) [key]

Anglicized form of the Irish name Brighid which means "exalted one". In Irish mythology this was the name of the goddess of fire, poetry and wisdom, the daughter of the god Dagda. In the 5th century it was borne by Saint Brigid, the founder of a monastery at Kildare and a patron saint of Ireland. Because of the saint, the name was considered sacred in Ireland, and it did not come into general use there until the 17th century. In the form Birgitta this name has been common in Scandinavia, made popular by the 14th-century Saint Birgitta of Sweden, patron saint of Europe.

    PHOENIX

    Gender: Masculine %26amp; Feminine

    Usage: English (Modern)

    Pronounced: FEE-niks [key]

From the name of a beautiful immortal bird which appears in Egyptian and Greek mythology. After living for several centuries in the Arabian desert, it would be consumed by fire and rise from its own ashes, with this cycle repeating every 500 years. The name of the bird was derived from Greek 蠁慰喂谓喂尉 (phoinix) meaning "dark red".

    VESTA

    Gender: Feminine

    Usage: Roman Mythology

Are there any beliefs that states that names have meaning?

if my name is Elisha is there a definite reason why i was named after a prophet? mother says a book fell in front of her and when she picked it up it landed on the page talking about him so she named me that. The book was the bible. Are there any beliefs that states that names have meaning?
I assume you mean the prophet Elijah? Do you know your god had a bear kill two dozen children simply because they made fun of his bald spot?
Hebrwe names...ie biblical names all have meaning. Elisha is a compound word...el meaning God and Ish man. Thus the name means 'man of god'. Some might claim that the tense is feminine. The word isha does mean woman, more specifically used to refer to a good wife. As the nation/people of Israel are often describe as being the 'wife' of God, for a man to have the name 'wife' of God is not inappropriate in that sense. It merely conveys that one has an intimate relationship with God, which aptly describes a prophet. Are there any beliefs that states that names have meaning?
All names have meanings regardless of belief. My name, for example means king or crowned one.

@ Somathus, you do realise that Elijah and Elisha are two different people and it was Elisha who was the bald one involved in the bear-mauling.Are there any beliefs that states that names have meaning?

AHRIMANES:_The name given to the chief of the Cacodaemons, or fallen angels, by the ancient Persians and Chaldeans. These Cacodaemons were believed to have been expelled from Heaven for their sins; they endeavored to settle down in various parts of the Earth, but were always rejected, and out of revenge they found their pleasure in injuring the inhabitants. Xenocritus thought that penance and self-mortification, though not agreeable to the gods, pacified the malice of the Cacodaemons. Ahrimanes and his followers finally took up their abode in all the space between the Earth and the fixed stars, and there established their domain, which is called Ahriman-abad. As Ahrimanes was the spirit of evil, his counterpart in Persian dualism was Ormuzd, the creative and benevolent being.

Do you prefer names on their actual meaning or how they sound?

Just curious. Would you rather chose a name which sounded very pleasing to the ear but had an bland or odd meaning or a name with a strong meaning that doesn't sound as lovely? I can understand both sides of the coin myself.Do you prefer names on their actual meaning or how they sound?
Both. The sound because I don't want them to get picked on or anything, I don't want to make their life hard just because of they're name.

And the meaning because I want to be proud of the whole name, the history behind it, it's origin, and everything, that way I can always be proud of it, more than it "just sounding nice".

Plus I know the meaning to almost every name I know, so it's hard for me not to think aobut it.
Sound, definitely. I think you can choose a name which means 'beautiful' and sounds atrocious! :)

If a name that I loved meant something like 'evil and twisted' lol I would still use it because, to me, sound is everything! :)

Interesting question! I actually have friends who tell me their names were chosen simply from their meanings, so I too can understand both sides :)Do you prefer names on their actual meaning or how they sound?
    It has to have both

but if a name sounded lovely but had a horrible meaning i probably wouldn't use it

like Kennedy means ugly head so i wouldn't use it i wouldn't anyway but just as an example

the same way i wouldn't use a name because it had a lovely meaning if it sounded horrible

A name needs to sound good and have a nice meaningDo you prefer names on their actual meaning or how they sound?
Definitely the sound and flow of the name! Though my daughter's name has a lot of meaning, it was important that it sound right. And my sister's name is beautiful, but it means palm tree... I don't think she cares, since her name is so lovely.
The sound of the name unless the name happens to be a word. For instance, I'm not a fan of Isla or Luna because those are the words for island and moon in Spanish. If it's tacky in English it's tacky in Spanish but that's just me.
    Sound and meaning.

I wouldn't pick a name I didn't like the sound of even though I loved the meaning, but I look for names with meanings I love, and I tend to like them because of it :)
Definitely the sound. The meaning of names don't really factor in all that much for me, unless it's truly something terrible. Then I might think twice about using it.
I can understand both sides too, but I would name children because I liked the names and not because they meant something wonderful. They would mean something wonderful to me without having an actual meaning.
my name is kendra, it means magical water baby. thats just plain WEIRD but i like how it sounds. i also like payton, allsyon, kaleigh, %26amp; rayne but i've never bothered to find out what they mean
I would say go with the sound. Most people are not going to look up or even know the meaning. More will go by the sound. And as long as the meaning is not bad or sad then I say go with whatever sounds best.
I go by how a name sounds and looks first then look up the meaning. Unless its a really horrible meaning it won't affect my choice much except to help me decide between names I liked.
Sound, meanings are just a bonus. The only time meaning might trump sound is if it is a family name or just a middle name.
    Sound
Sound. No one asks the meaning of the name (at least none of my family or friends)
definately by how it sounds. Most people dont even pay attention to the meaning..
sound. but if the meanings happened to be very cool then thats just a bonus.

  • Do all character names need to have meaning, depth and purpose?

becuase i can make up names till im blue in the face, but do you think names should mean something?

    Javier Morrison

    Calista Cormack

    Henry Lee

    Julian DuBoin

are all from the top of my head but should they mean something? will readers pick up on their meanings?Do all character names need to have meaning, depth and purpose?
Well, In my style of writing I always use names that come from the characters culture. I take time to develop a characters name because that's their label throughout the entire book.

I, and many others, find it cliche when someone names a character based off of the meaning. How do you know your child is going to grow up 'smart' or 'beautiful'? Other names that have a certain background to them can be predictable as well. Could you expect a vampire to be named Vladamir? Yes. But could you predict their name to be George? Not so much.

I think names should have some meaning to let us picture who their parents are since it's their parents who name them. As far as just slapping a name on an unknown person, I find it to be an easy way out. I'd rather take a few minutes going through a list of my favorite names and looking up cultural names. A name should have depth as you say but that's just my opinion. Readers can kind of tell when a name was thought up at the last minute.

Good luck and try to take your time with names. They're a BIG part of your character.

=)Do all character names need to have meaning, depth and purpose?
A lot of authors use that ploy, for example Richard Cypher was an inconsequential woodsman before the world realized how important he really was. However, I think if you do that for every character your manuscript can come across as silly. I personally prefer names that fit the character in whether they sound strong or timid or feminine, which goes along with their personality, rather than researching a deeper meaning. However, I think that is a style issue, not a hard and fast literary rule either way.Do all character names need to have meaning, depth and purpose?
I think that as long as they make sense to you, it's fine. You're the one writing about it. And no, readers don't usually pick up on meanings, unless they're very obvious (such as "Remus Lupin" being named after one of the twins who suckled from a wolf and founded Rome [Remus] and a name for werewolf [Lupin]... yeah, it was a huge shock when he turned out to be a werewolf.)

As long as you think the name fits the character, you should be fine. Some writers research names for ages before picking one (this would be me... though I tend more towards researching the names popularity during that birth year and focus a little less on meaning), some writers make them up off the top of their heads. Some writers like for characters to have meaningful names for their own purposes. Some don't care. Either way is fine, as long as it works for you.

Has your child ever been accused of calling another child mean names?

Mine has and I also saw her purposely hit another child right in the face and show zero remorse. My daughter is 7. I am very upset over this b/c I never want my child to be a bully or be mean. Do all kids go thru this? She is the youngest on her gymnastics team and the older girls sometimes pick on her. Could this be causing her to in turn pick on others? Please help.Has your child ever been accused of calling another child mean names?
i have a brother who is almost the same way. but its best to let them understand that violence doesn't always solve everything. sometimes, its best to talk to her to see what is going on. it also could be that your child is trying to stick up for herself and show that she isn't going to be picked on and let them get away with it. if you don't like the way she is handling herself, then sit down with her and talk to her about different ways of handling being picked on.Has your child ever been accused of calling another child mean names?
Being bullied creates anger, she's taking her anger out on others. At that age, that type of anger is foreign to them. Have a calm, heart to heart w/her. Explain unfairness of what she's doing. Give her an outlet, go to thrift store, find a tennis racket type thing, have her beat on her bed when she gets that angry. You might consider taking her out that gymnastic class and put her in another.

Good luck!Has your child ever been accused of calling another child mean names?
Oh hun this is such a worrying time but its normal for kids to act out of character when something is bothering them. Your child isnt a bully she is just obviously upset and you need to talk to her. Children deal with emotions differently some become quiet and withdrawn and others lash out. I think she will be fine when you tell her that its not the way to deal with others and maybe have a quiet word with the gym teacher about the older girls. Best of luck

How do you deal with people when they call you mean names?

Like, what are some things people have called you? Have they said it to your face or behind your back?

My best friend was telling me she went to a sleepover and a small group of girls there were saying how much I've changed. Like, how I don't go to church or anything like that and that I'm like, satanist and slutty. When I'm never, btw. :P

I kind of didn't give a FiretrUCK... I've heard much worse about myself. How do you deal with people when they call you mean names?
Just laugh it off. Kill 'em with kindness.

I've been called a *****, slut, whore, and an ***. Yay me!
The ONLY time you should worry about yourself is when your close friends or family sit down and talk to you about that kind of stuff. The only things you should trust is what a person who really cares about you says.

As for cliques, girls can be mean. Most of the time, they say those things because they are jealous. The best thing to do is to ignore it. If it continues, have a few good comebacks. Not hurtful or childish, just clever. Never, ever, let it bother you, and if it does, don't let it show to those girls or anyone involved with them.

Also, did your best friend stick up for you, if given the opportunity, at that sleepover?

    Good luck! :)

(Smosh FTW!)How do you deal with people when they call you mean names?
One person I knew used to talk behind my back. I'm not sure what they said though honestly, I rather not know. If I did, I probably would spend most of my time dwelling on it and trying to get my head around what exactly I had done. I believe the best way of dealing with criticism and gossip is to just move on and get over it. It doesn't matter how well you treat others, someone is still going to talk about you out of jealousy or just insecurity. Also, the ones who usually do the bad talking are the ones that people dislike the most and therefore are talked about the most. Don't let those girls get to you. You know your not that type of person. Be the mature individual and don't stoop down to their level. How do you deal with people when they call you mean names?
Too many things lol. I have been called fat ugly and weak. I have been called a man slut by many. And like half my school talks crap about me behind my back. But its the nerdy wannabe cool half so i don't really care all that much. When people call me name i usually ignore them. It won't piss me off unless its true and none of the crap people say about me is true so why should i care? Your haters are your biggest fans. They are the ones who can't get you off of there mind and sit around and talk about you with all your friends when your not there. The way i see it i am a well known person and if people know you there gonna talk crap about you there is nothing i can do to stop that so i just accept it and choose not to give a flying FiretrUCK.
it doesnt bother me much. its not what they say, but its the audacity they have to say it, ya know? if they say something behond my back, i almost always confront them about it to make sure its true. if they say it to my face, its a good chance we're gonna fight if they werent playing around.
I guess small things amuse small minds. Just ignore them.

    Answer to your question:

I used to get called gimp and I really hated it, but I just ignored it. I figured that if they knew it was bugging me they would pound the nails in.
I usually call them mean things as well. A guy once came up to me and said you're fat. Feeling annoyed because I know that I'm not. I told him he is a whale.
Remember; they won't be with you long term.

I go through this crap on a daily basis.
you will never make this f''n world happy so just ignore what people have to say about you ignore it your not here to please anyone but yourself screw them there not your real friends
deck their *** or threaten to do extreme violence that works for me

Where can I search baby names by meaning?

There are lots of baby name sites, but I'm looking for one that lets me search by meaning (and also, preferably sort by origin and gender). Can anyone recommend one?Where can I search baby names by meaning?
I use this website it gives you everything and every name. http://babynamesworld.parentsconnect.com鈥?/a>

on the right you will find links to origen, gender catogry ect...
I would use behind the name. It not only lets you explore names by names, popularity, namesake, namedays, origin, gender, and meanings, but it gives you a short history and the meaning of names from hundreds of countries and cultures around the world. It also gives you good names for twins and name themes. You can also translate names from one language to another. It is very useful as well as fun.Where can I search baby names by meaning?
This site allows you to type in a word, and it will search for baby names with that word in the meaning:

    http://www.thinkbabynames.com/

I think it also sorts it into gender, and will tell you the origin of the name.

E.g., If you wanted to look for a name that meant 'beautiful', you can type it into the search box and it will come up with names that have 'beautiful' in the meaning.

Hope this helps!! :)Where can I search baby names by meaning?
    http://www.behindthename.com

You can select "meaning" from the dropdown menu beside the search box and then filter the results by gender. It also gives the origin of the name next to the result (can't sort them by origin though). They also have a section that has names sorted by popular meaning already (on the left hand side under "fun stuff" %26gt; "name themes". Hope that helps!

Black people how do you come up with such unique names and phrases?

It has always amazed me how creative African americans can get when it comes to naming and language. I mean names like "shaquesha" and "Keishauntay" would never come in the minds of non black folks so tell me what is the secret in your creativity?

And with the phrases how do you get them to catch on so quickly? Like this one time a black started saying the phrase "dizzle da nizzle homeboy" , I don't know what it meant but it caught on pretty quickly.....in the ghetto.Black people how do you come up with such unique names and phrases?
Lol. My friend tells me I sound stupid when I say my hair is the texture of all races. She says Liz wet and wavy weave don't count.
What word do you not want to call a black person? HINT - It begins with an 'N' and ends with 'R'...........................…

Black people how do you come up with such unique names and phrases?
if you dont want a black neighbor to move into a house for sale or rent next door have your relative park across the street facing the house with a rebel flag also hang one from the porch.

refrain from saying phrases like "you people".

Also most black people do not like country classic rock or heavy metal. so blast it loudly.Black people how do you come up with such unique names and phrases?
Well I'm Asian, my name is HaeJung and I'm pretty used to names like:

    Min-Hee

    Iksun

    Seung-Hyun

    Kibum

    etc.

If you asked me, names like Kendra, Ashley, John, Chad and sh** like that aren't normal names. White people are so freaking low, you're below us, so how do you have the nerve to talk about other people. Asians dominate.
Welcome, long time no hear! How have u been? BLACK PEOPLE ARE CREATIVE SO WHAT CAN I SAY? Proper english is BORING and so are the people that speak it!

SO UV BEEN GONE ALL DAT TIME AND THIS IS DA BEST U CAN DO? NEXT TIME TAKE SUM TIME, WRITE IT DOWN AND TRY HARDER!
    Really want to know?

Know these names aren't names mentioned in the Bible.

They are just later names not like genetic/family names in bible.
Oh go away you ugly troll.

You're just mad because your brother is denying being the father of your unborn child.

Once again, thanks for the 2 points ;D
I love how white people have no creativity. I mean; you all use the same trolling questions everytime! Tiny eyed h0e. Go finger Sydney. Or suck your dad's c0ck.
Yeah I used to know this black girl with a really strange name, what was it? Oh yeah it was Kendra.
Guuuurl, do you be liking ma name?

    Ma middle name be Fri'Chickenisha.
It amazes me how unoriginal you are
Just stop it. You mad your family didn't invite you over for Thanksgiving dinner?
how do u find all this time to come up

    with ignorant questions..get a life,and make

real friends..spending your time on the internet

all day shows your so lonely..dumba*s c*nt licking

    bastard
feel solo because no one invited you over dinner for thanksgiving. or did the salvation army turned you away
wow why are people hating on this question? she's paying you a compliment on your creativity, not insulting your culture
    we are unique.
Kendra, you need to learn about the evolution of language. Off you go....
    lol, Welcome back Kendra.
I'm not sure that most of these aren't just the result of bad English skills.
shut your ******* mouth. God damn cracker.
    lol.

    i wonder the same thing.

I need cited works or related articles where i can find the meaning of the names in the tempest- Shakespeare?

Hey, I am doing a research page about The meaning of the names in the story the tempest by Shakespeare for school but I havent been able to find related articles on this cite. Could you help me out? I am not saying to give me the information because that would pretty much mean I'm taking credit for something you wrote but i would just love to know some related articles on this. Thank you so much.I need cited works or related articles where i can find the meaning of the names in the tempest- Shakespeare?
I had to do that too, but for Two Gentlemen of Verona. Basically what you'll have to do, as I've not found anything about the meaning of the names, is look up each name, what it means, and make your own connection to the character.

I haven't read the Tempest, so I can't exactly give you an example for that play, but in To Gentlemen of Verona, Proteus falls in and out of love with extreme ease, and Proteus is also the name of a sea god in Greek mythology who is also fickle, so there's a connection between the two.

What is are meaning of the names Camille and Camilla?

And do you like the names? I've never been a huge fan, but I'm writing a short story and the names just seemed to fit. Now they're growing on me. OH, and which one do you prefer? What is are meaning of the names Camille and Camilla?
Camilla was the name of a female warrior in the Aeneid. Camille is the French version. Here's a link for more info: http://www.behindthename.com/name/camill…

I like the names. Camilla does make me think of Camilla Parker Bowles, Prince Charles' lover.

I prefer Camilla because most people in the US say the French one cah-MILL, when it should be cah-MEE. And Camilla can go by Cami or Milla or Mila or Ami or Calla. I love how nn-rich it is.What is are meaning of the names Camille and Camilla?
I like Camille, but I'm not huge on Camilla all that much which is odd considering the names are so similar.

Camilla is of Italian origin and means perfect, whilst Camille means exactly the same but is of French origin instead.

VictoriaWhat is are meaning of the names Camille and Camilla?
I prefer Camilla because it sounds prettier. It's not very nice to me, but it's your opinion that matters. Anyway, to answer your original question, Camilla means Free-born and noble. That sounds pretty cool. And just in case, Camille means flowers I think.

    God bless!

Anyone know of a place online where I can find advanced meaning and origins of baby names?

I'm looking for something more advanced than this one-liner stuff I'm finding online. I know there's a computer program that you can buy that gives you access to a huge baby names database but I don't know what it's called or how to look it up. Any help would be appreciated. A friend of mine is having a little girl named Davanie Jayde and I wanted to do something with the meaning of her name for her room.Anyone know of a place online where I can find advanced meaning and origins of baby names?
I wonder whether this Yahoo question from 7 months ago was from your friend: "i am having a hard time with a girls name ....not sure if its a boy or girl yet but i have a boys name picked Silas and i have a 22 month old boy named Addison, i like unique names...any help on a girl.....my boyfriends name is david and im Dani we have the name Davanie pick its dave and dani together...what do you think???

Jayde is a spelling variation on Jade, the usually green stone which has been so prized in China for centuries for jewelry and carvings.

Where do I find baby names that are different but have the same meaning?

Okay. My mom's writing an autobiographical book, but she has to change the names to avoid legal suits.

However, being a true writer, she doesn't want to lose the essence of each person, and the name can truly define a person.

So I'm trying to find names that are different, but have the same meaning. For example, let's suppose that one person's name is Joseph. Joseph means "God adds." I want to find another name that means the same thing. Get it?

Does anybody have a website, idea, link, or anything else that can help me do this?Where do I find baby names that are different but have the same meaning?
Go to this website---you can either serach by meaning or by name. If you want the meaning to be "strong", you would type that in and it will list all the names that mean "strong".

Dogma Movie Bartleby and Loki. What is the meaning of their names?

Bartleby and Loki. What is the meaning of their names? What is a Grigori? What is an Angel of Death? How are these two fallen angels different from or similar to the fallen angels in City of Angels and/or Wings of Desire ?Dogma Movie Bartleby and Loki. What is the meaning of their names?
Bartleby, I'm not so sure, but Loki is the Norse god of chaos, mayhem and a trickster. Grigori is a Russian name as in Grigori Yefemavixch Rasputin, the Russian mystic who was the Romanov's occult advisor. An Angel Of Death is the angel in the Old Testament of the Christian Bible who killed all first born's of the Gentiles but the Hebrews put red paint above their door so the angel skipped those houses. Your last part of the question I don't understand, I'm sorry. I hope I helped.

Does anyone know the meaning of these names?

One name is Rajeevan, and the other one is charmitha. Is there any specific meaning in those names?Does anyone know the meaning of these names?
    Rajeev means lotus...........

the other one i don't know...
It might be fairly difficult to find a meaning for Rajeevan. All I have found out is that it can be used for either a boy or a girl, so it's unisex. Famous uses of the name include one of the leading art directors of the Indian film industry, mostly with the Tamil film industry and the Malayalam film industry. Charmitha seems to be a name associated with the Bollywood industry.

Why do people on Yahoo Answers call me mean names? What is wrong with being a troll?

I think they are annoying. It is not like they personally know me or anything. Besides, I don't see what is so wrong about being a troll.

I ask questions and want to see how they are answered. Isn't that the purpose of this site? Why do people on Yahoo Answers call me mean names? What is wrong with being a troll?
Some people, or ideas, cannot stand scrutiny.
Huh?Why do people on Yahoo Answers call me mean names? What is wrong with being a troll?
    Duh Huh?

    Akela,

the Lone WolfWhy do people on Yahoo Answers call me mean names? What is wrong with being a troll?
You that bored to be answering questions just by being silly? Isn't that whats wrong with being a troll. Especially on Yahoo Answers?
0/10. If you admit that you're trolling then you instantly fail.
They are just trollophobic, and are probably in the closet themselves.
There's nothing wrong with being a troll as long as you flaunt it. Your face is almost right...but your eyes need to be beadier. And you need some neon-colored cotton candy hair sticking straight up.

Then, when people see your avatar next to your questions, they will understand the context and answer accordingly. The trick to dealing with people is making fun of yourself before they have a chance to.
    Trolls are the nicest people
Trolls suck and so do you.
Better yet what is right with being a troll? no this sight was not designed for trolling, it is to seek and gain knowledge, where does a troll fit into this category?
The term troll was invented by hypocrites and liars.

And only the same use it.
Oh, I'm sorry, did someone hurt your feelings?

Then maybe you should quit trolling!
The purpose of this site is to LEARN, not to "ask questions and see how they are answered."

By being called a troll, you are being accused of deliberately asking something provocative just for the purpose of self-amusement from the myriad of harangued responses you may get, whilst ignoring the arguments of others.
Troll.. You keep fishing around. Thus you are a troll

Can you use normal names for fantasy characters?

In a fantasy story, would a fantasy fan find it bad or uncreative to use normal names for characters? Even if it's just for the human ones? I mean names like Gabriel and Madison, and in a setting of swords, bows and that. Can you use normal names for fantasy characters?
Heh, depends on the way you write it. I think you could probably get away with it if you do it well. :) I think it would be interesting, but it might break the magic for other people.
i think it would be fine as long as you keep it consistent, like if your going to have humans have the normal names (that's what I do) don't have a mermaid named Bob, or a human named Gerillia (or whatever fantasy name) unless there is like a reason for it. Also if your going to do all human names, keep it like that, maybe use uncommon ones, but don't make any up. If it's coming up with fantasy names that's the probably and your afraid of coming up with bad ones, don't feel bad, the same happens to. Most of my characters just have parts of two names combined (like i have an elf named Sophiana) so yeah. But like I said just keep it consistentCan you use normal names for fantasy characters?
    Absolutely.

    It's your story.

You can name the characters whatever you want to!

In the end, it isn't the names that count--it's the characters.

If a character isn't believable, I won't read the story.

I do like creative names, though. But that's just me :)

    But, it is YOUR story.

Name the characters what you will! Can you use normal names for fantasy characters?
There are no official "rules" to writing a book. You can write it however you would like it. I personally prefer unusual names mixed with a few normal names throughout the book.
I think it's okay. It's just that fantasy settings allow for more creative names to be used without them seeming really odd or out of place. Strange names are required though.
In all honesty as a fantasy fan. A hero called Dave would be pleasantly refreshing lol.
Nothing wrong with calling them Gabriel and Madison in a fantasy sword-fighting book.
Edward is a real name. Harry is a real name. So yeah ;)
    Of course its normal

actually none of the names listed above are relevant as they all include the character 和 (wa), which means "harmony", but referring to peace rather than in the musical sense which we attribute to the term.
