In the book series of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, what do they mean NAMES HAVE POWERS?

Through out the books, I've read that "names have powers"

If was first mention in book one, when Sally Jackson is talking to her son and when Percy says Minotaur, his mothers states "names have powers"

...what do they mean by that?|||In Percy Jackson world if you say a name that god or monster will know you are talking about them

example

Percy said Zeus was crazy in the first book, thunder rumbled in the sky, Chiron said its bets not to called Zeus crazy.

When Percy is talking to that women in the sea he says 'why doesn't Poseidon come see me himself' and some cold water hits Percy

If you say the name than that monster will find the demigod better or the god will know you are talking about them|||In a lot of cultures magic and ritual is a big part of their lives. For this particular bit of "magic" I'll make an analogy.

Lets pretend that Joe Shmoo is a very powerful man, politically. One day a hacker gets online and steals Mr. Shmoo's identity, takes his credit card and his insurance. The whole nine yards. He has his NAME. That name has power.

In the book people continually tell Percy that "names have power". He has to be careful not to draw attention to himself. Having someone's name is having power over them. It's why you don't put your name out on the internet everywhere.|||In certain mythology someone's true name held a lot of power. They would hear you if you said it, and that would likely draw their attention to you, and in other cases you could try to control them with it. Throwing someone's name around was considered foolish and disrespectful in these myths.|||This is based on the old myths that knowing someones name gives you some power over them. (If you know their "true" name, you gain full power.)

I believe "true" name is full name, but there may be another part to it as well.|||I have read many books that say that..... I believe it is based on some old books of fantasy that by knowing your name they can have a limit to moderate control of you.

i hope this helps|||i believe it means that just naming a person has its own powers. like in harry potter when they say voldermort it gets wizards all rowled up. his name has power; just his name gets people scared|||okay, well they are saying that saying the name means that u unlished power, or they can hear u and intervene. like sitting on ur father's chair (wink*)
